Mijas Pueblo is one of the Costa del Sol’s most enchanting white villages, beautifully situated in the hills overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Famous for its whitewashed buildings, charming cobbled streets, colourful flower displays, and breathtaking coastal views, the village offers a true glimpse into traditional Andalusian life. The village has a rich history dating back to Roman times, when it was known as Tarnisa. During the Moorish period, the name changed to Mixa before eventually becoming Mijas after the Christian reconquest. Today, hints of its fascinating past remain visible in the narrow winding streets and sections of the old village walls.
Among the most recognisable features of Mijas Pueblo are its traditional donkey taxis, or “burro taxis,” which have become a well-known symbol of the village. Visitors can also explore a variety of historic attractions, including the unusual oval bullring, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the beautiful Virgen de la Peña chapel carved directly into the rock.
Exploring Mijas Pueblo feels like wandering through a living postcard. Hidden squares, artisan boutiques, cosy tapas bars, and quiet terraces are scattered throughout the village, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. From many viewpoints, visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views across the Costa del Sol and, on clear days, even see the coastline of North Africa.
