Rural Tourism

The rich and beautiful nature in Andalucia, coupled with its famous "white villages" has made the concept of rural tourism popular with tourists. 17 percent of the land in Andalucia is protected as nature reserve. These nature reserves are home to some extraordinary flora and fauna. There are several animal species, hundreds of bird species, and rare and exclusive plant life. Against the rolling green background of the mountainsides, the white expanses of the villages create a picturesque setting. The environment is well-preserved and increasing awareness has brought about efforts to protect the natural and rural areas.
Here you will get to see a completely different face of Malaga. The houses retain their authentic look with flowery balconies, sloping roofs, and white walls. The atmosphere is relaxed as the streets and lanes are fairly quiet. The distinctive Moorish and Roman impressions are evident in these villages too. There are churches, towers, palaces scattered throughout. Some of them still stand in a remarkably good condition and the architectural and artistic styles can be appreciated even after the passage of centuries. Here you will get the glimpse of the traditional art and handicrafts of the region. There are some outstanding examples of pottery, metal works and carpet making.

The rugged landscape makes these areas ideal for rock climbing, trekking, camping, and mountain biking. Also, bird lovers and nature lovers arrive here to see the various animal and bird life. An innovative solution has been found to provide for the accommodation requirements. The many old houses and cottages have been converted into plush living spaces from the inside without changing their rustic appearance. New hotels too, are being constructed using the traditional materials and techniques.

Some of the villages and the tourist highlights in them are:

Totalan

This village is surrounded by hills and ravines where olive and almond trees are found; there are also beautiful pasturelands. Along the riverbanks there are orchards, and gardens planted with commercially important produce. This small territory is surrounded by low to medium hills as the Salazar (512 meters), Vareno (501 meters) and Las Herrer?as (664 meters) hills. The Nuestra Senora del Rosario church is the most important building in the locality. On the Saturday before Palm Sunday, there is normally a flamenco festival.

Sedella

As one enters the village, the landscape becomes gentler and there are houses scattered about on some of the hills and brushy areas, fields and pastures interrupted by lush, green pinewoods. Two streams, one of which has its headwaters at El Pardillo and the other at Fuente Chaparro, join a few kilometers from those places and form the River Sedella. The place where these two streams run together, known as Cerillales de la Fuente, is of great scenic beauty. In Sedella, apart from visiting the ruins of a fort, it is worth seeing the parochial church of San Andres Apostpol (the Apostle Saint Andrew) dating from the 16th century. The San Andr?s church stands out prominently in the village. In the eastern part of the village is the hermitage of the Virgen de la Esperanza (Virgin of Hope), which was built in the seventeenth century with simple design which was in harmony with popular architectural patterns. In it are the images of Nuestra Senora de la Esperanza and of San Anton, the patron saints of the village.

Carratraca

The sulphurous spa waters: Balneario, are the star attraction, with an enclave developed around the fountains and a hermitage from the 18th century. One can also find craftwork objects and tools made from esparto grass, carved wood and wrought iron. The village houses hug the slopes of the Sierra Blanquilla range, and many places in it are excellent vantage points commanding beautiful scenic views. Carratraca’s Plaza de Toros (bullring) was inaugurated in 1878 and has room for 3,000 spectators. It is unique because of the two features: its shape is not circular but polygonal, and is dug out from the rock of Sierra Blanquilla. The church of Senora de la Salud (Our Lady of the Health) is one of the main buildings of architectural interest, though it dates back to the recent 19th century. The Town Hall is also of interest because of its neo-Arabic style.
