| A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1986, it is only the second national park in Andalucia besides the Donana National Park. The forests here support some remarkable and rare species of flora and fauna, a biological wealth in the form of 150 endemisms. The Sierra Nevada National Park comprises of 86,208 hectares of torrential rivers, steep ravines, rocky slopes, glacial lakes, and thick forests. There is a vast array of tree species such as holm oak, sweet chestnut, Pyrenean oak, pine trees, and many more. The plant varieties include endangered wildflower plants such as daffodil narcissus nevadensis, Sierra Nevada sandwort and the wormwood artemisia granatensis. The plant species found here are outstanding: over 120 species of endangered plants, around 70 plant species exclusive to the Sierra Nevada, and 175 species native to the Iberian Peninsula.
It is also the favourite destination for bird lovers, as the area is home to over 60 different species of birds. Nesting birds of prey include golden eagles, Bonelli's eagles, peregrine falcons, griffon vultures and kestrels. Higher up in the slopes, there are Alpine accentors, black redstarts, northern wheateaters, rock thrushes, rock buntings, red-billed choughs and skylarks. In the woodland areas are hoopoes, short-toed treecreepers, green woodpeckers, coal tits, great tits, goldfinches and golden orioles.

| The effects of the past civilizations are evident here too: the highly developed irrigation system of the Moors, and the Alpujarras’ flat roofed houses. The villages are situated the slopes and offer a breathtaking view of the landscape below. There are small shops in the villages selling local handicrafts. The economic mainstay of the people is the agricultural produce such as cereal crops, olives, grapes, almonds and walnuts which are cultivated in the southern foothills of the mountains. To the south, we come across the old Moorish settlements of Las Alpujarras, where the highest towns in Spain and the excellent facilities of Lanjaron Spa, which is a natural spa, can be found.
