Iznate lies 29 kms from Malaga and 5 kms from the coast at Benajarafe which is midway between Rincon de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, at an altitude of 311 metres. It is situated within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of Sun and Avocadao, and has a population of 1,000.
The village is surrounded by small hills and is irrigated by the River Iznate. It has wonderful panoramic views over the mountain ranges.
Of Moorish origin, the village layout has steep, narrow streets. The parish church of San Gregorio VII was built in the 16th century and houses several valuable paintings.
Getting there:
If you are coming from the Costa del Sol, take the Mediterranean Expressway A-7 (N-340) from Malaga in the direction of Motril. About 20 kms short of Velez Malaga follow the signs towards Cajiz and get onto the MA-177, which will take you to Iznate. If you are coming from Velez Malaga take the A-335 and after just two kms turn onto the MA-135 and go to Benamocarra. From that village continue on the MA-136 to Iznate.
