Fuengirola, Malaga

Fuengirola seems almost a paradox. It is probably most famous for its five miles of sandy beaches, flanked by high-rise hotels and residential blocks of apartments with magnificent views of the Mediterranean and sweeping coastline.

It is a major tourist resort on the Costa del Sol, with more than 8 km of beaches. The beaches known as Boliches - Gaviotas and Torreblanca hold a European blue flag.

It's surface area is 10.2 square kilometres & population is about 60,000.

Fiestas:

The big festival in Fuengirola is the feria in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, and it takes place in October. The Holy Week celebrations are very important here too, as is the noche de San Juan, the night of San Juan, which takes place at the summer solstice. Another event not to be missed is the festival of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of the sea. During the month of August there are a number of festivals and cultural activities, such as the Festival Ciudad de Fuengirola, which takes place in the castle.

Getting there:

The Mediterranean Expressway (A-7; N-340) perfectly links the town of Fuengirola with the rest of the Costa del Sol. It is also possible to get here by train (Route C-2 of the "Cercanias" or commuter line) from Malaga, Torremolinos and Arroyo de la Miel (Benalmadena). Fuengirola is just twenty minutes from Malaga airport.
