Benamargosa lies 37 kilometres from Malaga and 14 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar, on a flat area at an altitude of 100 metres surrounded by small hills. The village is of Moorish style with narrow streets and white-washed houses. The main products of the municipality are citrus fruits, olives, vines, avocados, mangoes and chirimoyas.

There are, as always, several bars and restaurants in the village but one of particular note is Los Arcos. Its appeal is in the ambience and background music and a choice of Spanish and English cuisine. The tapas are excellent and, for the British residents, the English breakfasts and Sunday roasts might tempt. The parish church of La Encarnacion was built in the 16th century incorporating Gothic and Baroque features.

This lovely village is very conveniently situated only 10 kilometres from the bustling town of Velez-Malaga and 46 kilometres from the provincial capital, Malaga. The town is 96 metres above sea level and has a population of about two thousand people.

The Benamargosa river flows past the village nearby and the fertile river valley is planted with groves of subtropical fruit trees as well as the traditional olive, almond, orange and lemon trees and extensive areas of vineyards.

How to Get There :

To get to Benamargosa, take the A-335 in the direction of Velez-Malaga from the Mediterranean Expressway (A-7, N-340). About 5 kilometres past that locality the turning will be marked for the MA-145, which leads straight to Benamargosa.
