Alpandeire Information:
Alpandeire is a Spanish municipality and village located in the Ronda area, near the peak of Jarestepar, (1,421 metres high), and surrounded by rugged and beautiful scenery. Numerous streams run through its territory.
The present-day village dates back to the 8th century, Alpandeire being one of the first towns fortified by the Moslems in the Serrania de Ronda region.
The layout of its streets still reflects the influence of Andalusi-Arabic culture, and particularly impressive for the visitor is the large nave of St. Anthony of Padua Church, which dates back to the 18th century. Alpandeire has become a meeting and pilgrimage point for many people wishing to visit the birthplace of Brother Leopold of Alpandeire (1864-1956), a Capuchin almoner renowned in Andalusia, whose beatification has been in progress since 1961.
Getting there:
To get to Alpandeire from the Western Costa del Sol you must start from San Pedro de Alcantara towards Ronda on the A-376. About 12 kilometres short of Ronda take the MA-525, which at Cartajima becomes the MA-518, to Juzcar. You must continue from Juzcar to Farajan on the MA-517, and from the latter locality, you will get to Alpandeire by the MA-516. It is really the same road but it changes its designation depending on the municipality it is crossing.
If you are travelling to Alpandeire from the Eastern Costa del Sol, you must of necessity pass through the city of Malaga and take the A-357 towards Cartama and continue on to Ronda.
